'With its stunning characterisation, tight plot and dramatic storyline, Half Bad is brilliantly cinematic'
Sally Green's debut novel, Half Bad is advertised as "the book that's become a global sensation before it's even published". The publisher, Penguin, boasts that it has already secured deals in 36 different territories and 25 languages, while the film rights have been snapped up by Twentieth Century Fox.
After all this I rather expected the book itself to be a disappointment but amazingly enough it fully lives up to the hype. Half Bad draws the reader into a covert world of 'good' white witches and their mortal enemies, black witches.
Then Nathan is born – half white witch and half black. He is an extraordinarily vivid character, brimming with anger against the prejudice of white witches and the restrictions imposed on him by the white council so the reader cannot help but empathise with him. Green's writing perfectly reflects the conflict within Nathan's character, her tight prose contrasting superbly with the often violent events she is describing. With its stunning characterisation, tight plot and dramatic storyline, Half Bad is brilliantly cinematic – personally I can't wait for either the film or the sequel.
