Penguin are publishing a set of new editions of five of John Steinbeck's novels in April. They include The Grapes of Wrath, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and one of the writer's lesser-known works, The Moon is Down. We have five sets to give away
While The Grapes of Wrath is undoubtedly Steinbeck's masterpiece, The Moon is Down is an enduring testament to the true power of literature. Penguin Classics are publishing it alongside his best-known novels in new editions in April, in the hopes of inspiring more readers to return to this iconic American author, and to consider him afresh, as a novelist to be enjoyed.
The Moon is Down was published in 1942, at the height of Nazi power, and had an electrifying affect on occupied Europe. Despite Axis attempts to suppress it, the novella was secretly translated into a dozen languages, and thousands of copies circulated clandestinely. It was smuggled into Norway on tissue-thin paper and in suitcases after being translated in Sweden by an exile. Simply having a copy was punishable by death in Italy. It became the most popular work of contemporary American literature in wartime Soviet Union. Few literary works have demonstrated so triumphantly the power of ideas in the face of tyranny.
Guardian Extra members have the chance to win one of five sets of the new editions of five John Steinbeck novels, including The Moon is Down. The competition closes on 7 April.
