Michael Symmons Roberts, Anne Carson and Daljit Nagra are among the lineup for this year's £15,000 poetry prize
The Forward prize-winning poet Michael Symmons Roberts heads the shortlist for this year's TS Eliot prize alongside reworkings of myth from Anne Carson and Daljit Nagra.
Roberts's sequence of metaphysical poems, Drysalter, is also up against Robin Robertson's Hill of Doors for the £15,000 prize, as well as collections from Dannie Abse, Moniza Alvi and Sinéad Morrissey.
Maurice Riordan's The Water Stealer, Helen Mort's Division Street and George Szirtes's Bad Machine are also finalists. Each of the shortlisted authors will receive £1,000.
The chair of the judges, Ian Duhig, payed tribute to fellow judges Imtiaz Dharker and Vicki Feaver, and congratulated the shorlisted poets as well as those who were not selected, "so much of whose work I read with enormous delight and envy", calling it a "nightmare" to draw up a shortlist "from so many fantastic books".
The winner of the 2013 TS Eliot prize will be announced on 13 January 2014.
