After 23 years running Britain's largest book publisher, she has taken charge of the newly merged Penguin Random House UK
Job: chairman, Penguin Random House UK
Age: 61
Industry: publishing
New entry
Dame Gail Rebuck is chairman of the UK arm of Penguin Random House, the merger earlier this year that created the world's biggest book publisher.
Rebuck, who previously spent more than 20 years heading Random House UK, chairs a publishing behemoth with 25% of the global market and revenues of more than £2.5bn, spanning Jamie Oliver, Zadie Smith, Dan Brown and Fifty Shades of Grey writer EL James.
The tie-up between Bertelsmann-owned Random House and Pearson-owned Penguin was the biggest event in publishing since Amazon (to which, with the Kindle and everything else, it was also a response).
Rebuck's late husband, Labour strategist Philip Gould, died in 2011.
A flagwaver for the digital publishing revolution and a strident campaigner for literacy and the arts in schools, Rebuck was succeeded as UK chief executive of the enlarged operation by Tom Weldon, former UK boss of Penguin.
