Literary wanderlust – in praise of travel books and the places they take us

Ciara Murphy discusses the books that transport us to anywhere in the world, and the role of travel books in instilling wanderlust in all who read them

As I sit in my armchair, book in hand, I can feel a warm breeze rustling through my hair and the gentle lapping of water at my feet. Although safely ensconced at home in London, I could be anywhere in the world. This week I’m on a beach in French Polynesia, next week, perhaps somewhere in the Alaskan wilderness, or cowering from a storm in the Arctic Circle. I have, without a doubt, contracted wanderlust.
