Goldsmiths book prize shortlist: Lennon, Jesus and life at the edges

Six titles honour ‘fiction that breaks the mould or opens up new possibilities’, with the winner to be announced in November

An anachronistic whodunnit investigating the death of Jesus and a freewheeling story of family bereavement partly narrated by a crow are among the six titles shortlisted for this year’s Goldsmiths prize.

The award, now in its third year, was set up to honour “fiction that breaks the mould or opens up new possibilities for the novel form”. Both its previous winners - Eimear McBride’s A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing and Ali Smith’s How to Be Both - went on to win the Baileys women’s prize for fiction, a risk that has been sidestepped this year, since all six shortlisted writers are men.
