50 Books | 50 Covers celebrates cutting edge book design. Started by the American Institute of Graphic Arts in 1923, it is the oldest design competition in the US, and it is now hosted by Design Observer. This year, for the first time, the winners be published in a book, with an introduction by Dave Eggers, and will also be displayed in a touring exhibition – you can help them achieve that on their Kickstarter campaign page.

Design Observer editor Jessica Helfand says: “What’s interesting about annual competition is that it becomes a cultural snapshot of a value system and a set of visual vocabularies, and an interest at a given moment and time to a swathe of the population that cares about books and book design.” Here us are some of her favourite 2015 designs.
