The Man Booker shortlisted novelist will make her screenwriting debut on the Beau Travail director’s first English-language film
Zadie Smith has been recruited by Claire Denis for the writer-director’s new film, a space adventure set beyond our solar system in a future “that seems like the present”, according to Screen International.
Smith, author of the award-winning bestselling novel White Teeth, will write the script with her husband, Nick Laird, and Denis. It is Smith’s first venture in scriptwriting, although White Teeth was developed into a TV show for Channel 4. A film adaptation of her 2005 novel On Beauty, about a mixed-race British-American family’s experience of moving to the US, is in the works.
