The French novelist Patrick Modiano was hailed on Thursday as a Marcel Proust of our time as he was named as the 2014 winner of the Nobel prize for literature.
The Swedish Academy said it was celebrating Modianos art of memory, rewarding a writer who repeatedly returns to the same themes and subjects: memory, identity and alienation all rooted in the trauma of the Nazi occupation of France.
