Man Booker International prize assembles grand names for advisory 'e-council'

Many past winners and judges of the main Booker prize have signed up to advise on its international sister prize

Full details of the 80-strong group of Man Booker prize-winning novelists and former prize judges – including double winner Hilary Mantel, and AS Byatt, a former judge and winner of the prize – will offer informal advice to the Man Booker International prize judges.

The formation of a new "e-council" of advisers, who will never meet face to face, hit a bump in September when Antonia Fraser withdrew from the network in protest at the expansion of the Man Booker prize to include American writers. Changes to the prize rules meaning that writers in English from any country are now eligible have been criticised by writers including Philip Hensher, who wrote in the Guardian that "it is hard to see how the American novel will fail to dominate".

Members of the e-council have been invited to make reading suggestions for the 2015 prize, from which the judges will hone a list of eight finalists to be announced early that year. "Between them, they offer an astonishing wealth of knowledge and experience in international literature. Our 2015 judges are looking forward to considering their suggestions for the initial reading list," said prize administrator Fiammetta Rocco. The 2015 Man Booker International prize judges will be chaired by Marina Warner.

Big literary names on the advisory network include writers Susan Hill and John Sutherland, both of whom have judged the Man Booker prize twice. Previous Booker winners including Kiran Desai (2006), Roddy Doyle (1993), Kazuo Ishiguro (1989), and VS Naipaul (1971) are also advising.

The Man Booker International prize, worth £60,000, is awarded every two years to a living author for a body of work which represents "an achievement in fiction on the world stage", and is published either originally in English or is available in translation. The prize was inaugurated in 2005, with this year's award going to US writer Lydia Davis. The previous winners are Philip Roth (2011), Alice Munro (2009), Chinua Achebe (2007) and Ismail Kadare (2005).

The international award differs from the Man Booker prize, which is presented for a single novel written in English. When the expansion of the Man Booker to include all writers worldwide was revealed, chairman of the trustees Jonathan Taylor said: "We are embracing the freedom of English in its versatility, its vigour, its vitality and its glory wherever it may be. We are abandoning the constraints of geography and national boundaries."

The Man Booker prize has also sought to limit the number of titles that its judges are asked to read. Judges were asked to read 151 books this year, but the new rules will limit submissions depending on the number of titles for which a publisher has been longlisted within the past five years.
