'I think the book would have been better written in French!'.

The Things We Did for Love is a romantic love story, which takes place in France during the Second World War.

Arianne and Luc are teenagers who live in the same village in South-West France and they are in love. Another pupil at the school, Romy, is also in love with Arianne, but he knows she will never love him because he's disabled.

Arianne is heartbroken when Luc joins the Resistance, but she understands that he wants to make this sacrifice to protect the people he loves. Romy also makes a sacrifice for Arianne, even though he knows Arianne will never ever love him.

At the end of the book, the author explains that she based the story on a true event – the massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane. In a way, it's a shame that I didn't know this at the beginning of the story and I'm still not sure how relevant it really was.

Being French, I really wanted to like this book, but unfortunately it didn't work for me. The dialogue was too modern, somehow. Also, the conversations between characters come across as slightly weird - I get the impression that the author's translated from French to English as she's written it. In other words, I think the book would have been better written in French!
