James H. Smith Pens Fun Algebra Workbook

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (PRWEB) July 18, 2013 CHESAPEAKE, Va. – For many young students, algebra is the bane of existence, posing problem upon problem and always ending with the infuriating phrase, “Solve for x.” James H. Smith spent his 32-year teaching career assisting students in mastering algebra. The supplementary activities used in his lesson plans serve as the foundation for his new activity workbook, “Algebra 1 Activities” (published by iUniverse).

“It is necessary for students to develop proficiency in mathematics to meet the challenges in today’s changing world as it relates to various careers,” states Smith. “As the world becomes more interdependent, students will face global competition. Being able to meet the challenge of change is inevitable; hence, this book has a great deal of activities to meet the students’ needs.”

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. eighth graders rank ninth in math with only seven percent of students reaching the advanced level in eighth grade math. Singapore and South Korea lead in eighth grade math with 47 percent reaching the advanced level. Smith hopes to encourage students to build strong algebraic foundations, which are prerequisites for proficiency in more advanced mathematics in the future high school and college years.

“Students should be able to demonstrate mastery of algebra skills and approach problem solving with more confidence.”
