Malchus One Ear

R. Gordon Zyne

iUniverse, 248 pages, (paperback) $16.95, 9781450207744

(Reviewed: July, 2013)

Angels and demons fight a spirited battle for the souls of the staff and residents of a rehabilitation center located on the seedy side of Brooklyn in this intelligent thriller reminiscent of Frank Peretti’s This Present Darkness.

It’s 1975 and Dr. Daniel Aarons has been hired as director of the rundown drug and rehabilitation center. His spiritual battle begins when Daniel tries to save the center from an imploding budget and evil bureaucrats. He confronts the powers of both demons and angels who, each in turn, attempt to draw him either away or toward God. Daniel is strengthened in his spiritual awakening by a Messiah figure, Malchus, a severely disabled resident, and taught the healing power of relationships through the center’s receptionist, the complex and artistic Stephanie Croix.

Minister-author R. Gordon Zyne creatively exposits Judeo-Christian beliefs as plausible and attractive and weaves this belief system throughout the dialogue and the soulful soliloquies of various demonic, angelic, and human characters. A deep consciousness of the human plight and struggle for meaning is reflected in the characters’ points of view: “A deep blue mist seemed to hang in the room. The two men, both survivors of the Nazi camps, stood in their . . . shrine to sanity and insanity . . . sentinels gazing out across a decaying urban landscape. Beneath them was the dirt and grime of a human-littered forest floor. They tripped over the bones of long-dead dreams and picked at the scraps that dangled from low branches.”

While such passages are intriguing, the author could have achieved even stronger plot and character development by relying less on a frequent omniscient voice in favor of sustaining individual points of view more thoroughly. At times, lengthy omniscient narratives dilute the reader’s understanding of the characters’ evolution or devolution, which is the story’s main focus.

Nonetheless, Malchus One Ear will likely find an appreciative audience among spiritually attuned readers.

The Fo'c'sle Door

Les Cribb

iUniverse, 666 pages, (paperback) $32.95, 9781475984644

(Reviewed: July, 2013)

The cliché about not judging a book by its cover holds true with The Fo’c’sle Door. With its uninviting title, and simple pencil drawing on the cover, it doesn’t exactly scream “bestseller” — and yet readers will find a gripping epic adventure within its pages.

The story begins when Canadian police are called to a scene where two men have died and witnesses are acting strangely. The story then flashes back two months earlier to the characters who end up at the bizarre scene. One is headed to England for a wedding at a tiny fishing village, Ryeport.

It’s a confusing start, but soon author Les Cribbs gets to the heart of the story, when the town’s present day vicar begins reading from the journal of the vicar who built Ryeport’s famous church centuries ago. From here, the story becomes all-consuming.

The tale focuses on dandy Rodney McDowd, whose father disinherits him and sends him into the priesthood to improve himself. McDowd ends up in Ryeport and acts the part of the town’s spiritual leader to please his father. But over time, he begins to care for the townsfolk and conceives of a church that doubles as a lighthouse in order to help local fishermen navigate Ryeport’s dangerous shores. He also becomes part of a smuggling ring — initially to help protect his parishioners who are involved. The town's criminal undertow leads to a run-in with a violent sea captain and later a mysterious Haitian who seeks revenge from the captain for his daughter’s death — even if it takes generations and a supernatural twist to accomplish.

While a copyeditor could have eliminated the many errant commas and apostrophes, Cribb’s characters are likable, his dialogue convincing and his knowledge of English history and ships impressive, adding to the main story’s realism. He deftly progresses the narrative until the end, when the book returns to the present. The paranormal denouement works (although some may feel the story of McDowd and Ryeport’s past is more entertaining than the ending’s artificiality). Overall, this is an entertaining, satisfying novel delivered by a talented storyteller.

The Sixty Seconds

Ted Jackson

iUniverse, 101 pages, (paperback) $10.95, 9781475976595

(Reviewed: July, 2013)

Ted Jackson’s novel The Sixty Seconds falls loosely into the time travel genre. The book’s main character, Jason Bricker, loses his job as a software engineer and discovers, on the same day as his termination, that he can go back in time in 60-second increments.

Driven by the need for financial security, Jason convinces his family that he should use his ability to manipulate time at the gaming tables in Las Vegas. He plays a variety of games, from roulette to blackjack to Texas Hold ’Em, and wins a substantial amount of money. He also forms a friendship with an attorney from Arizona who convinces Jason to move his family there from Colorado.

They restart their lives in Arizona, and Jason gets a new job. Everything proceeds normally until he uses his time-manipulation for less selfish and more risky purposes. The novel closes with Jason explaining his special power to government authorities, giving the reader the feeling that a sequel will follow with Jason using his “gift” as an agent for the United States.

The plot moves right along, but The Sixty Seconds offers little else to attract the reader. Jackson’s descriptions are minimal and fail to create a world that the reader can visualize. Jason, for instance, buys a house in Arizona, but the reader is told nothing about it except that it has a central air unit and a swimming pool.

Jackson also fails to develop his characters sufficiently. The protagonist’s wife and sons are so poorly realized that they serve only as ghostly backdrops to the plot. To make his novel more appealing, the author would do well to flesh out the narrative with some vivid descriptions and more three-dimensional characters.

Blue Period in Seattle

Blue Period in Seattle

Selected Poems ( 1991 - 2011 )

By John W. Gorski

Published: 10/3/2011

Format: E-Book (available as PDF, ePub, and Mobi files)

Pages: 92

ISBN: 978-1-46205-417-6

Print Type: B/W

Overview:

John Gorski’s Blue Period in Seattle traffics in a play of atmosphere, both meteorological and psychological. These atmospheres evoke a kind of emotional synesthesia: “I get off the bus/ at 64th and Linden/ because the dark organ chords of alcohol laughter/ are playing out of tune.” Blue Period in Seattle dares us to partake of a fretted, penumbral world, haunted by muses who are alternately flushed from “the rose pink immanence /of the morning horizon” and morbidly pale: “her pre-Raphaelite face—a lunar masque /advancing out of the night.” It is not surprising that Gorski is drawn to the lives of the artists, and to their “progenitor” muses. These artists record their findings and, in the process, see what others tend to overlook. Fascinated by artists in their old age and even decrepitude, Gorski seems to be asking himself what the upshot of such a vocation, finally, turns out to be—what, in short, are the wages of art? Yet in other poems, such as the “The Five-Year-Old Sheriff,” Gorski’s droll side reigns, as the mood strikes. All in all, Blue Period in Seattle represents a particularly fertile moment in Gorski’s oeuvre. For those as yet unfamiliar with his work, it’s a great place to start.

iUniverse Review: “Thus have I heard”

iUniverse review today takes you on a tour of the British Library, 1 of the 2 biggest libraries in the world, alongside The US Library of Congress.

The Diamond Sutra

The Diamond Sutra

The title above refers to the most common first words of Buddhist texts and the context here is that amongst the treasures housed in the British Library is the Diamond Sutra, which is the earliest example of block printing that bears an actual date. The colophon, at the inner end, reads: made for universal distribution by Wang Jie on behalf of his parents on the 15th of the 4th moon of the 9th year of Xiantong, 11th May 868, approximately 587 years before the Gutenberg Bible was first printed.

The extant copy is a scroll, approximately 16 feet long. It was discovered in 1907 by the archaeologist Sir Marc Aurel Stein and then purchased from the walled-up “Caves of the 1000 Buddhas”, which can be found at Dunhuang, northwest China.

iUniverse Authors Get B.R.A.G.GING Rights

BRAG Awards Logo Excuse the pun, but the Better Readers Appreciation Group (B.R.A.G) has just awarded its latest round of Medallion Honorees and iUniverse Publishing is pleased that the following books and authors have received this prestigious award.

iUniverse Betrayal by Michele Kallio

iUniverse Betrayal Awarded in the historical fiction genre, this Canadian debut author has received excellent reviews, best summed up by Melysah Bunting for TheLitCritic:

“The book is a real page turner and has all of my favorite ingredients: history, intrigue, secrets, love, passion, betrayal and mystery. Although the chapters were told by different characters, I didn’t find it at all confusing and Kallio made me indentify with each of the characters. I didn’t like her portrayal of Jane Boleyn, George Boleyn’s wife, but that’s just me. All of the characters were believable and I enjoyed the contrast between the two historical periods and the lives of the two women. The story was drawn together beautifully at the end, with all the different threads and the reasoning behind Lydia’s dreams. I hope that Kallio will produce more novels as this was an excellent debut.”

“hilarious and touching… impossible to keep a straight face… a terrific writer…”

-ForeWord Clarion Review

Marty Drysdale, an aspiring screenwriter-burglar, tries to finance his own movie—about burglaries he just might be committing—only to find himself pursued by a mob of angry investors and other unintended victims, such as his ex-wife.

When Marty first meets Chick, a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, he has an ounce of marijuana in the backseat of the limo he’s driving and a breaking-and-entering offense on his record.

He escapes that first meeting with just a traffic ticket as well as a major crush on the woman who is six inches taller whom he nicknames “Officer Beautiful.”

After just a month of knowing her, Marty asks Chick to marry him, and against all hope, she giggles and agrees. But Chick quickly grows frustrated with his laziness and oddities.

Then, one night, coming home from his latest job as a projectionist at a movie theater, Marty crashes his Flxible Flxette Buick limousine. In the shower of sparks, glass and twisted metal, he has an epiphany: he will film his own movie and prove to Chick that he’s a man worth having.

It isn’t long, however, before Marty finds himself pursued by a group of angry investors and other unintended victims of his latest scheme. He’ll have a lot of explaining to do if he wants to get out of his latest pinch and keep the woman of his dreams in Odd Jobs.

Interview with iUniverse Author Patrick Amer

An interview with Patrick Amer, author of The Five Commandments of Jesus.

Available @ iUniverse Bookstore: http://bookstore.iuniverse.com/Products/SKU-000129954/The-Five-Commandments-of-Jesus.aspx

Overview:

“In The Five Commandments of Jesus: A New Approach to Christianity, Patrick Amer presents to the ordinary Christian and the theologian alike his new, refreshing, and clear approach to the mission and meaning of Jesus of Nazareth. Amer identifies the five commandments of Jesus as central within the recorded ethical teachings of Jesus. These five commandments show the continued relevance and importance of Jesus in expressing God’s will and plan for humankind. The book is clearly written and readily accessible to all readers. Discussion groups across denominations will find that this book meets each reader at the exact point at which we all find ourselves today.” Roger Haight, S. J., Union Theological Seminary

In this book, Patrick Amer describes his discovery of the five commandments of Jesus. He shows that the commandments are not a random selection of commands. They are an integrated and focused attack on humanity’s most deeply embedded anti-social behaviors, those placed there by natural selection. He shows that these behaviors were in ancient times absorbed into humanity’s public institutions, and they are still there.

The kingdom of God is the community of men and women who live by the five commandments of Jesus, applying them in their personal lives and to public institutions as well. This book examines each commandment to show how it is to be practiced in one’s personal life and how it is to be applied to public institutions. By practicing the five commandments of Jesus, the followers of Jesus participate in his redeeming mission and with him save the world.

Interview with iUniverse Author Terry Lawrence

An interview with Terry Lawrence, author of “On the Wings of a Dove,” an inspirational book of poetry celebrating life and the love of God.
Available @ iUniverse Bookstore: http://bookstore.iuniverse.com/Products/SKU-000132539/On-the-Wings-of-a-Dove.aspx

Overview:

On the Wings of a Dove is a compilation of poems designed to stimulate an appreciation for the simple blessings we oft times take for granted because of the havoc and chaos that surrounds us in our daily lives here on this earth.

The dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit and represents simplicity, gentleness, divine guidance, marital affection, and the deepest kind of peace. Its wings exemplify the Love of God and God’s forgiveness. The dove’s unadorned and striking white image provides us with an ever-present reminder that there is always hope when there is faith in our Heavenly Father.

The poetry within On the Wings of a Dove are intended to provide inspiration and support as an arsenal against troubling times and difficult situations, to produce a guiding light on darkened day, and to give one the solace and belief that our Heavenly Father loves each of us, watches over us, and is preparing our place within His Kingdom.

iUniverse Author Mike Kohler makes a plea for more clarity

iUniverse author Mike KohleriUniverse recently talked to author Mike Kohler who had posted some interesting items on the iUniverse Publishing Facebook page. As his bio says Mike was born in 1948 and has lived a varied and unique life, in which he has found the magic that binds it all together and now he wants to share that magic with all through his books. However he has a few frustrations with the modern day processes. We leave it to Mike:

Proud of his iUniverse books.

“I will start this by telling all that I am not a Rhodes Scholar, or even close to a Pulitzer Award, but I have something that many share with me, confusion!

I am new, as far as being a published author, however I now have three books, The Valley, The Keepers Children: The Realm and The Challenge of Palakrine, all self-published through iUniverse. These are the first three books of an eight book series and I am proud of them. They aren’t perfect by a long shot, but their mine.”

With its engaging characters and historical accuracy, "I Am Dianna" is sure to please and thrill readers to the very last page. "The book hits the reader with more force, as the protagonist is a modern woman from Manhattan who suffers this degradation within her dreams, although their consequences spill into reality," says MJR.

Author James Robert Russell Releases New Memoir on Love and Relationships

MENTOR, Ohio (PRWEB) July 21, 2013 - What initially was self-reflection to heal wounds and renew hope became James Robert Russell’s newest work, “Delicious Rejection: The Memoirs of a Hopeless Romantic” (published by iUniverse).

“Delicious Rejection” chronicles a life from boyhood to manhood through short stories, poetry and personal observations. It is passionate, descriptive, humorous, and often times painful, but ultimately a valiant search for love and romance.

“I just want readers to experience it as I did,” explains Russell, “to hear it, see it, smell it and taste it. I would like them to process it in their minds, feel it in their hearts and let it linger in their souls.”

Excerpt from, “Delicious Rejection”

“I forged a bond with them that was hardened by the trials of being on the road together, while all the time and tenderness kept it malleable. We were many hours more than friends, seconds from lovers and light years from being mere co-workers.”

Patricia Anne Dye’s ‘The Seven Sages’ Explores Wisdom-based World

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (PRWEB) July 21, 2013 - With the publication of her new novel “The Seven Sages” (published by iUniverse), author Patricia Anne Dye presents readers with a transformative tale about seven wise beings who live on the Earth at this time. Each exemplifies a way of living wisely and well from the integrity of the soul.

Many world legends suggest that at any given time, seven sages live on the Earth. They are tasked with the responsibility of anchoring wisdom on behalf of humanity. Each one stands as the personification of a different rung of human consciousness. Together, they represent humanity’s innate ability to save – or destroy – itself.

An excerpt from “The Seven Sages”:

“‘Where does sex fit in all this, then?’ I asked.

‘Ah, sex,’ she sighed, ‘so much glory wrapped up in that act – so much more joy than mere animal satisfaction ... Did you know that sex and salvation are close buddies? Even the most mindless sex encounter gives a glimpse of unity – and that above all is what humans need to feel – a simple sense of oneness with the world, with all care obliterated ...’”

“We scarper across the surface of fast-moving techno-driven societies where there is precious little time for pondering on matters of the spirit,” Dye says, “the ‘how’ of living soulfully. Yet never before in human history has there been such a need for a transformation to wise living; our very survival is at stake.”

New Book 'Of One Womb' Is Author G. Paul Lawrence’s Take on Race and Relations

Tucson, AZ (PRWEB) July 22, 2013 - "Of One Womb: The Essence of Two Families" (published by iUniverse) is the story of James Lee Trucker. The story opens in Louisiana and moves to the suburbs of Los Angeles. Twenty-five years after losing her son to unscrupulous in-laws, Dorothy receives a letter from her son, James Lee, informing her that he wants to meet her, and he would be in LA the next day. With an inter-racial marriage, Dorothy must determine if this man, her son, will be a positive influence on her family, or if his racist attitude will bring them all down.

According to Grigsby, "Of One Womb" addresses "mixed marriages in a way that is real for the reader. This book looks at mixed marriages in a pragmatic way. It scrutinizes many of the obstacles encountered by the participants. But in the end, love can conquer all."

An excerpt from "Of One Womb":

"I love you James Lee. I will always love you. But, I don’t like you. I don’t like you because you are a threat. A threat to the safety of your brother and sister, my children. I don’t like anything that threatens them or who they are to become!" Dorothy’s voice took on a hard edge again. "No! I take that back. I don’t like bigots! I don’t like bigots of any kind even if that bigot is my son."
